TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japan is considering imposing additional sanctions against Iran, Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Wednesday, a day after the attack on the British Embassy in Tehran, Kyodo News reported.
"By working in partnership with countries concerned, we must consider what other steps could be appropriate from various angles," Gemba said at a news conference when asked about the possibility of additional sanctions against Iran.
"As a matter of fact, I could say that we are already considering what to do," he said.
On Tuesday, protesters in Tehran broke into the British Embassy compound during a demonstration against punitive actions imposed by the European country over Iran's nuclear programs.
Gemba described the embassy attack as "regrettable." He said Japan will call on Iran to prevent a recurrence of such an incident as it is Teheran's responsibility to ensure the safety of diplomatic establishments.
Along with other major countries, Japan has enforced sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programs, including a freeze on the assets of those linked to nuclear development and tighter supervision of financial transactions.
